Samir Sayegh
Samir Sayegh (b. 1945, Beirut) is a pioneering Lebanese artist known for transforming Arabic calligraphy into abstract visual art. Trained in art history and steeped in classical Arabic manuscripts, he views calligraphy as pure form and aesthetics rather than language or meaning. Using large pens and bold strokes, Sayegh abstracts Arabic letters into dynamic compositions that balance tradition with modernity. Influenced but independent from the Hurufiyya movement, his work redefines calligraphy as a contemporary art form. He teaches graphic design and remains a vital figure in Beirut’s art scene.
