Mounzer Kamnakache

(1935 - 2018), Syrian artist Mounzer Kamnakache is a multidisciplinary painter and sculptor known for ethereal works that blend existential and mythological themes. He graduated in 1968 from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus and later pursued advanced studies in Paris, where he lived for nearly two decades. After returning to Syria in the 1990s, he taught at his alma mater and today resides between Switzerland and Syria. His sculptures and paintings have been exhibited in prominent galleries across the Middle East and Europe.

Kamnakache’s pastel works often center on a recurring red-haired heroine, inhabiting dreamlike spaces removed from everyday reality. His robust female figures recall the sensuality of Rubens and Renoir, while also evoking ancient fertility goddesses. For the artist, woman represents both the pulse of life and tenderness, placing humanity before profound existential questions; accordingly, his compositions convey tranquility and meditation.
