Fateh Al Moudarres
Fateh Moudarres (1922–1999) was a leading Syrian painter and pioneer of modernism in Syria, blending local heritage with Western artistic influences. Born in Aleppo, he studied in Rome and Paris before returning to Syria, where he became a prominent professor and Dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus.
His work reflects social and political struggles, portraying themes such as rural hardship and regional conflicts through symbolic, solemn figures with distinctive square-shaped heads. Using earthy tones, textured brushstrokes, and sometimes sand, he developed a deeply expressive and recognizable style.
Moudarres was also a writer and influential thinker, shaping generations of artists. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections, including the British Museum and Mathaf in Doha.
