Juliana Seraphim
Juliana Seraphim (1934–2005) was a Palestinian artist born in Jaffa. After fleeing to Lebanon in 1949 following the Nakba, she settled in Beirut, later studying fine arts in Florence, Paris, and Madrid. Influenced by surrealism, her dreamlike, intricate work explored themes of femininity, sexuality, and emotional complexity, often featuring floral and architectural motifs. Unlike many Palestinian artists, she didn’t focus on political narratives, setting her apart from the “camp artists.” Seraphim exhibited internationally, including at the first Salon d’Automne at the Sursock Museum in 1961, and remained active between Beirut and Paris until her death.
